Deutsche Telekom builds Germany’s largest data center in Saxony-Anhalt
Magdeburg/Bonn, June 16, 2010
- Telekom invests in cloud computing
- 24,000 m2 of new IT space by 2015
- Around 70 new jobs in Saxony-Anhalt
Telekom subsidiary T-Systems is building a new data center near Magdeburg. With approximately 24,000 m2 planned space for information technology, it will be the largest high-security data center of any IT service provider in Germany by 2015. The first construction section, to be completed in 2012, will provide 9,000 m2 of IT space and around 70 new jobs. The state of Saxony-Anhalt is supporting the project with a subsidy in the double-digit million range.
Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Dr. Reiner Haseloff, expressed great delight at the decision in favor of the Saxony-Anhalt site: “We have been holding intensive negotiations with T-Systems about the site since the end of 2009 and these negotiations have now been successfully concluded. This represents a further boost to the local IT sector, which is already growing strongly. By providing financial support, we are investing in truly innovative technology, which will offer good employment prospects in Saxony-Anhalt in the long term.“
"Cloud computing is a growth driver: When intelligence moves to the network, customers purchase and pay for ICT solutions on a flexible basis as required. At present, customers are primarily large corporations, but an increasing number of smaller firms and consumers will benefit from cloud computing in the long term," said Telekom CEO René Obermann. "Consequently, we are gradually expanding our cloud computing capacity. Germany offers an important locational advantage to our customers, including our international business customers: It has a particularly secure legal framework in terms of data privacy, " said Obermann.
